Choose This Day!

You cannot hold to both the philosophy of the world and the truth of God.  They are at odds with each other.

“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” – 1 Corinthians 1:18

“For the wisdom of this world is folly with God.  For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness,’ and again, ‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.'” – 1 Corinthians 3:19-20

The words of Joshua ring just as true as a command to us today!  The gods he talked about were not necessarily the gods the culture today worships but anything we worship that is not God (capital G) is an idol.  In Joshua 24:14 we read about Joshua giving the command to worship God.

“Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.”   And in 24:15 we see his command to choose…

“And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

And we see the people’s response in verse 16-18:   “Then the people answered, ‘Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods, for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. And the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.’ “

Our response should be: “We also will serve the LORD, for He is our God.”

Remember, Christian, that God is the one who brought us out of the house of slavery to SIN.  He has begun a good work in you, worship and serve God!  And unbeliever, He is the only way for you to be free from sin and in a right relationship with God the Father.
